One of the most memorable events in Israel’s history is when they crossed the Jordan River after leaving the wilderness (Joshua 3). Forty years before, they were led to the land and failed to enter because of a lack of faith. Upon their return to the land their faith was again tested. Would they trust God to provide safe passage across the river? Would they follow God into the land? Would they have the faith needed to go forward?
The Israelites approached the land and were forced to make camp because of the overflowing Jordan River. Just outside the land of promise they were required to wait upon God. Their plans came to a sudden halt and their future seemed uncertain when they stopped before the flooded river. There are times you must continue walking with God even though there appears to be insurmountable obstacles in your way. You must go as far as God permits and then wait upon Him to provide what is necessary to continue.
This endeavor was an organized crossing under the leadership of Joshua. Through the wilderness they followed the pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night, but now they were to follow the Ark of the Covenant that was carried by the priests. The Ark represented God’s presence with the people (Exodus 25:22). The LORD would lead them into the land and provide the direction they required. This is similar to the way Christ works in the life of the believer. He provides our needs while directing our steps.
As the Israelites entered the land they were taught to follow God’s direction and to trust in Him for all things. The LORD would lead them, they just had to follow. Likewise, God will direct your steps as you walk with Him.
