My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word. Psalm 119:28
In this verse we’re given a vivid description of a heavy heart. It’s described as a soul that melteth away. A heart so heavy with cares and concerns that it just falls to the ground.
What causes a heavy heart? It may be that things are not the way they used to be. Change can lead to a heavy heart. It might be that things are not the way you thought they would be. Unmet expectations can cause a heart to fall. It could be that things are not the way you believe they should be. Sometimes selfish desires lead to a burdened heart.
No matter the cause, a heavy heart produces many problems. Patience may be exhausted, strength might be drained, and your faith may even waiver. The long term effects are discouragement and depression.
But all is not lost. There is hope. When David’s soul melted he looked to be strengthened by God’s Word. The Bible, God’s Word, is filled with people, problems, and principles. As you read God’s Word you will eventually be confronted with your problem and God’s divine direction.
Notice, David did not ask for a new life or for his difficulties to disappear. He just wanted strength to endure the hardships set before him. In his moment of weakness David looked to God’s Word for help.
The remedy for a heavy heart is a good dose of God’s Word.
