And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. Mark 15:2
After a night of intense interrogation the Jewish leaders held a meeting to render a verdict concerning Jesus Christ. The debating, discussing, planning, and plotting eventually led them to this moment. What shall we do with Jesus? It was concluded that Jesus was guilty and worthy of death but the power to execute judgment belonged to the Romans.
Jesus Christ was then taken before Pilate in hope that he would agree with their conclusion and put Jesus Christ to death. Before rendering a verdict Pilate met with Jesus Christ. The conversation that followed was a surprise to Pilate and a display of Jesus Christ’s unique power. The Lord answered briefly with careful yet powerful words. He never addressed the accusations but spoke boldly when asked about His identity.
Here are some thoughts concerning Christ’s answer to Pilate during this difficult time.
His authority – Jesus Christ acknowledged that He was the King of the Jews. Jesus Christ is also the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 17:14; 19:16).
His assignment – Jesus Christ was not a threat to the Roman Empire or Caesar. He was on a unique mission as Saviour and not conqueror.
His appearance – Jesus Christ will return to the earth as both King and conqueror.
There was a distinction made between Jesus Christ’s identity and His work. Jesus Christ, the King of kings, was determined to die on the cross in order to make atonement for sin. He endured the humiliation and suffering so that sinners might be saved.
Jesus Christ is the great King and wonderful Saviour!
