He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame. Proverbs 10:5
Opportunities come and go. They appear, linger for a while, and then vanish away. This proverb encourages you to make the best use of the opportunities you’ve been blessed with.
Two seasons are mentioned, summer and harvest. Summer is the time work can be done; the days are long and the warmth of the sun encourages activity. The opportunity is there to gather for increase and to store for future use. One may make great gains if they apply themselves during this time. One might also live with regret if they fail to gather when the days are nice. Harvest is the time work must be done; the days are short, much colder and time is limited. Crops left in the field will be lost to the bitter cold of winter. There is no time to waste and those that neglect to work will suffer the consequences; lack of food for the cold winter months. The son that gathers when opportunity presents itself is considered wise, whereas the son that neglects to work when it is necessary is a shame.
God gives you opportunities for good. Seasons of summer and harvest. Times to work and be blessed. You must take full advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Study and learn as much as possible when you’re given the chance. Work hard, spend wisely, and save for the future as you live today. Teach others when necessary, share the gospel of Christ with those in need, leave a good example wherever you go, and be a blessing to someone if the opportunity presents itself. Every day give your best into your current responsibilities; whether that’s as a spouse, parent, child, church member, employer, co-worker, student, etc. Use your gifts and talents for God’s glory and make sure you read God’s Word today, pray today, and attend your church whenever the doors are opened. The more you take advantage of these spiritual blessings, the stronger your faith will become.
The opportunities you have are numerous. Thank God for them and don’t let them pass you by.
