Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24
In this passage we have David appealing to God to search his heart. Why? Because David wanted the truth.
This was wise. David could have examined himself, which is good and necessary at times, but his limitations would have hindered his judgment and his flesh certainly would have tempted him to overlook his shortcomings. One problem with self-examination is that it’s easy to excuse or justify sinful behavior. With God the truth will be known.
David dared to open his heart to God for a full investigation. This examination would go beyond his conduct and test the desires of his heart. Everything would be discovered and considered, including David’s motives. To have all of one’s actions known might be enough to shame some, but for the secrets of the heart to be exposed would be terrifying to all. Nothing can be hidden from God’s examination of the heart.
To ask God to search the heart is a great act of integrity. It meant David hoped for the truth even though it would expose his sin. We may not mind our good deeds being made known, but it’s difficult to hear about our faults. To David this was important, because he wanted to know what God saw in him and thought about his life. Why? David wanted to make sure he was following the LORD.
How about you? What does God know and think of you?
Are you willing to allow God to search your heart?
May God search my heart and yours so that we might know where we stand before Him.
