And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. Mark 14:27-29
As Jesus Christ led the apostles to the Mount of Olives He impressed upon them the importance of being prepared for the difficulty that was ahead. Quoting Zechariah 13:7 He shared that they would be offended and scattered. But all would not be lost because Jesus Christ would arise from the grave and meet them on the shores of Galilee. The conversation should have ended there but Peter could not let it go. The bold apostle disagreed with Christ and boasted that he would never be offended. Peter was mistaken.
Pride – he believed he was above the others and unable to fall. His pride blinded him to reality and produced problems.
Self-confidence – he believed in his strength over God’s Word. He disagreed with Jesus Christ because he was sure he had the power to remain faithful.
Disobedience – he ignored Christ’s teaching. Jesus Christ said it would happen, so it was certain. Peter should have accepted the truth and looked to Christ for strength.
After being confronted and told that he would fail three times that night, Peter responded with anger. Perhaps he was angered at being corrected or upset that his faithfulness was called into question. Peter persisted in his boasting and was certain he would never deny Christ. Peter was wrong.
Learn from Peter’s mistakes and take God at His word.
