Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Acts 17:16
In Athens Paul’s heart became burdened because of the widespread idolatry in the city. While speaking on Mars Hill Paul noticed the altar erected TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. After declaring that he knew this unknown god, Paul taught them about the One True God.
God is the creator – He created the world and all who inhabit it. Acts 17:23-24
God is a real being – He is not a man-made image. Acts 17:25
God directs the nations – He determines their course and boundaries. They do not direct Him. Acts 17:26
God can be known – He has made Himself known to His creation through the Word of God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Acts 17:27-28
God is not of our making – He is not the product of mankind’s designs or plans. Acts 17:29
God is gracious – He has withheld judgment and is willing to forgive all who repent and believe in His Son Jesus Christ. Acts 17:30
God will bring judgment – He has appointed a time when sinners will be held accountable for their wicked deeds. Acts 17:31
Paul wanted them to know that God is both great and gracious so they might know Him as their God. This is the same message needed today.
