Learning from the Wise Men

12/22/2022

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Matthew 2:1-2

Wise men, probably more than three, traveled west to worship the newborn king. Who they were and exactly where they were from remains a mystery, but there is much that can be learned from these men.

They Went by Faith

All they had to follow was a star. Nothing else. Some would think that’s not much to act upon, and they would be correct, yet these men packed up everything and followed that star to Bethlehem. That’s faith. The wise men were not given much, but what they had they followed. They believed God sent the star, which He did, and that He would direct them to the king, which He would. By faith they followed what they were given and were blessed. Today, instead of waiting for more signs or seeking after new teachings, be faithful to the directions God has already given you in His Word, the Bible.

They Worshiped by Faith

They were looking for a king. What did they find? A small child residing in a humble home in a rural town. To the world, this may not have appeared promising, but to these men it was a wonderful sight. Evidently they looked beyond circumstances and recognized the small child as God’s Son Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah and King of the Jews. Jesus might not have worn an earthly robe and crown or held a royal scepter but He was, and remains, the King of kings and Lord of lords. This was understood, and so by faith they worshiped the young child as the King.  Jesus is worthy of worship and He deserves the worship of all men and women. Do you worship Jesus Christ?

The wise men appeared suddenly in the scriptures and just as quickly disappeared. Although we know very little of these men, they left us with many lessons, one of which is the importance of faith. So live by faith this Christmas season.
