Learning From David’s Patience

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul. 2 Samuel 2:4
Waiting upon God can be difficult. In this passage we find Judah’s leaders gathering in Hebron to meet with David. They went looking for a king and found the man the LORD selected. Everything had pointed to David as king, but David had to wait for the men of Judah to make it official.
Much can be learned from David’s behavior throughout the process. Though the future king may have been tempted to hurry things along, he wisely allowed the LORD to work all things out.

  1. David’s confidence – he knew he was anointed to be the next king (1 Samuel 16:13). With this knowledge it may have been tempting to believe one could assist God in the matter. It seems David was willing to let the LORD work out the details of His promise without his help. David trusted God.
  2. David’s circumstances – he knew the time was near since Saul and Jonathan had been slain (1 Samuel 31). Instead of acting upon what appeared to be the right thing, David let God stir the hearts of the leaders, so they would make him their king. David waited for God to confirm the decision.
  3. David’s conduct – he did not force himself upon the people. David refused to assume the throne with a display of human force and might. Instead, he trusted the LORD with the matter (Psalm 59:9). David acted correctly and God blessed.
  4. David’s contentment – he was content with God’s direction for his life, so he was willing to let God exalt him (Philippians 4:11; 1 Timothy 6:6). Discontentment often leads to rash and improper decisions. David avoided making foolish mistakes because he looked to God.
As you walk with God trust that He has not misplaced or misdirected you, then wait upon God to work.
