He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. Proverbs 18:13
Hasty conclusions and hurried opinions are common. Answers to problems are given before the issue is even understood or one side of a story is believed wholeheartedly without offering the other side a chance to explain. Some pride themselves on being quick with an answer or first to solve a problem, to the extent that they will form opinions without hearing the whole matter.
It’s foolish to make conclusions about something not understood or to render a verdict without gathering all of the information. These hasty conclusions and hurried opinions hurt lives and destroy relationships. Many are harmed by this unfair behavior, including the one jumping to a conclusion.
Here are three thoughts to consider before forming an opinion on a matter.
Listen to others: Let others explain their side of the story. Be determined to hear all involved before giving your opinion.
Look beyond appearances: That which seems right at first might be wrong and what is presented as truth may turn out to be false. Be patient and refrain from making decisions until all is revealed and understood.
Learn all of the facts: It’s been said that there are two sides to every story. The truth is there, be willing to wait until you find it.
Don’t expect to know a matter in mere minutes. Consider everything and everyone involved and wait until the facts are known before settling on a conclusion. Also, apply this thinking to your relationship with God. It might be tempting to draw conclusions based upon circumstances. Remember, God’s plans and purposes often remain unknown until fully revealed. Someday you may know more about God’s will in a matter, but until then walk by faith and trust in Him.
Be willing to hear a matter out before giving an answer.
