“A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.” Proverbs 14:16
In this proverb we’re given the reason why some overcome temptation while others stumble and fall. It’s not due to a mystical power, magical formula, or modern methods; but a correct perspective of God.
First we’re introduced to a wise man. One that is able to apply his knowledge correctly. Wisdom enables him to discern right from wrong, which leads to good decisions. Where did this wisdom come from? It’s the result of fear. Not necessarily a frightening fear, but a moral fear; a fear of God that produces awe and reverence.
When the fear of God is within your heart, you’ll have wisdom. Why is this? Fear will keep you from evil. It will dictate your decisions and direct your steps. You will leave sin alone, withdrawing from it as you would the plague or fleeing from it like it’s a terrible beast. Knowing sin is offensive to God, whom you fear, you will avoid it at all costs. Sinful thoughts will be set aside, evil ways will be avoided, and worldly philosophies will be shunned. Instead, you will glorify God, read His word, talk to Him in prayer, remain faithful to His ways, serve in His church, and live according to His will. Fear will lead you to be faithful!
A wise person stays away from trouble and departs from that which is destructive. The fear of God keeps evil away.
In this proverb we also find a fool; someone stupid or silly. How can you tell a fool? They rage, which means to push on with fury. A fool heeds no warnings, learns not from the mistakes of others, and refuses to listen to advice. For a fool, it’s about getting what they want at all costs, no matter the consequences. The mark of a fool is persistence in having his or her own way.
Why is this? The fool is self-confident. Wisdom comes from within and not from above. Decisions are based upon worldly knowledge and limited experience without direction from God. When given a choice, a foolish person chooses what feels good, seems right, or is popular at the time. Once settled, they cannot be moved or checked by common sense, others, or even God.
There is no fear in the foolish because they are self-absorbed. Little, if any, thought is given to God. Life is about pleasing the emotions and gratifying the flesh. Without the fear of God it becomes easy to yield to sin and evil.
Foolish people push forward without consideration of consequences. They hurry to harm and rush to regret.
This proverb is a reminder of how to avoid evil. It’s the fear of God. When God is looked upon correctly, as The Almighty God of the World, He will be feared and this fear will keep you from sin. Like Joseph in Egypt, when tempted to sin, you will flee (Genesis 39:7-12).
