My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. James 1:2-3
You’re going to have some difficult days. As W.B. Riley put it, “The man who thinks to pass through this life without trials understands neither his own nature nor yet the environments in which he is placed.” Most have discovered that difficulties come in various forms and without discrimination.
What can you do? It’s good to understand what James meant by ‘temptation.’ The word ‘temptations’ means putting to proof, and this is usually done by experiment. It implies testing for verification. Since every trial is a test, that means the difficulties you must endure serve a purpose. The general purpose for trials is to test the believer’s faith. It’s a time to discover the strength of your spiritual life and to grow closer to God. The more you’re tested, the stronger you will become. Knowing there is a purpose will help you get through those difficult days.
How can you endure these temptations? Here are some thoughts.
1. Be renewed and transformed – every day renew your mind with God through prayer and with His Word. Romans 12:2
2. Be saturated with the word of God – look to the Bible, learn from it, and live by it. Colossians 3:16
3.Be aware of your thoughts – dwell on God and His ways. 1 Corinthians 2:16; Philippians 4:8
4. Be in control of your thoughts – quickly set aside any ungodly or wicked thoughts. 2 Corinthians 10:5
5. Be desirous of the things of God – seek after the LORD and live for His glory. Colossians 3:2; 1 Corinthians 10:31
With God you can get through temptations while growing closer to Him.
