And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two… Mark 6:7
It was time for the apostles to act upon the training they had received. In a special commission Jesus Christ sent them to the houses of Israel with a message from God.
Mark alone tells us that the men went out in groups of two. Since companionship provides strength, courage, and encouragement, it’s best to serve the Lord with other believers.
This mission was a test of their faith because they were to take only the essentials while trusting God to provide their needs. The apostles were to abide with those who accepted them and depart from those who rejected their message. The men obediently carried out their assignment.
Their Preaching – they challenged the people to repent of sin. Repentance, a change of mind which results in a change of direction, was preached because of the Messiah. Jesus Christ was sent to forgive sin and give eternal life.
Their Power – their great power to heal and cast out devils was evidence that God had sent them. This proved that Jesus Christ not only had the power of God to perform miracles but also the authority of God to empower those He commissioned.
The apostles were faithful to Christ’s command and by faith delivered the Lord’s message to the people.
Likewise Jesus Christ has commissioned all believers to take the gospel to the lost (Matthew 28:18-20). To be an effective witness you must follow God’s command and trust in His power.
