“Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1
Although not declared, most presume to have tomorrow, so plans are made with the assumption of carrying them out. What’s wrong with that? Tomorrow does not belong to you, it belongs to God.
To boast of tomorrow is to have the confident expectation of its arrival and the certainty of the events the day is expected to bring. In doing this you deny God’s power over tomorrow and claim it as your own, which is not only incorrect but also foolish.
Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. The future is unknown, uncertain, and unseen. Tomorrow, and what it holds, is a secret which will be revealed when you get there. Not before. People have gone to bed healthy and awakened sick or not awakened at all. Some have lost everything in minutes or hours while others have enjoyed great gains. Tomorrow is a mystery that will be unveiled when it arrives.
What does this mean for you?
Be careful of placing confidence in that which you cannot guarantee. Consider the instability of the world. Your life depends upon unseen sources and is affected by many circumstances. Also, don’t forget your ignorance of tomorrow. You may know probabilities but it’s impossible to tell what the future will bring. Lastly, admit your inability to change tomorrow. Only God has power over future events.
If you have concerns, don’t despair! Things may change. You might get sunshine instead of rain. God is in control, so be anxious for nothing.
Cast off the temptation to delay and postpone important matters to an imaginary time in the future, which may never arrive or be different than expected. Don’t defer to tomorrow what needs to be taken care of today. Get right with God, read your Bible, pray, get involved in your church, and be a witness today. If you procrastinate, it may be too late. The opportunity might be gone, and once gone it may never return.
This proverb does not encourage you to live for the moment while ignoring the future. Quite the opposite, you’re to look to tomorrow with confidence and joy in God. Prepare and plan with God in mind. The problem is not in thinking of tomorrow but boasting of having it. Prepare, but don’t presume. If God permits, praise Him! If God changes your plans, praise Him!
Today belongs to you. Tomorrow belongs to God. You’re not responsible for the future but for the present. Live today and trust God to take care of the days to come. Rely on His power and not the possibility of tomorrow.
