Blessings from a Burden
And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. Acts 28:3
As Paul collected wood for the fire a viper bit him in the arm. Paul was given no warning and was unable to escape the venomous creature. The missionary instantly threw the snake into the fire and continued about his business, miraculously unharmed. The astounding event surprised everyone.
When Paul was bitten, the islanders were sure he was guilty of murder. Paul was probably chained and may have been guarded, so they might have assumed he was a violent man and that he was getting what he deserved. Apparently, they believed that all evildoers would have something bad happen to them. Keep in mind, God will bring judgment upon sinners in His time and in His way but God also permits hardships to come to His children so that He might be glorified through their lives. (James 1:2-4)
After Paul shook off the viper the people concluded that he was a god. Popular opinion is uncertain; one minute he was a murderer and the next he was a god. The missionary was not affected by either accusation. Paul knew he belonged to God so the slanders of the world did not discourage him and he understood he was saved by God’s grace so the honors of the world did not change him.
Because of God the viper’s bite became a blessing instead of a burden.
Paul was protected – no harm came to God’s man.
Paul was preserved – he would reach Rome, just as God promised.
Paul was profitable – the miracle opened up the doors for Paul to tell the people about Jesus Christ.
Let God work in your life and your burdens might become blessings.
