The Greatest Commandment
And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? Mark 12:28
A scribe went to Jesus Christ with a question. It appears the man’s request was genuine. He asked the Lord which commandment was the first, meaning the chief or greatest commandment of them all. It’s a good question. Jesus answered kindly and even gave the scribe more than what he asked for.
Love God with all thy heart – we must love God better than we do ourselves (Deuteronomy 6:4-6). The LORD deserves our whole heart and mind. Nothing should take the place of God in our life and nobody should be worshiped but the LORD. This is the greatest commandment.
Love thy neighbor – we must love our neighbor as we do our self (Leviticus 19:18). When this was first given Israel was separated from other nations, only Jews were their neighbors. Jesus Christ applied the command to the current time, teaching that everyone was to be shown love. This is the second greatest commandment.
Of course it’s impossible to display this love without God’s help. A Saviour is needed and it’s Jesus Christ.
