An Act of Kindness

And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? 2 Samuel 9:1-4

Several years passed following the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan. Through the years David’s fondness for Jonathan never faded.  Because of their strong friendship and David’s promise to Jonathan, he was determined to find out if any of Saul’s family had survived the wars of Israel. The years of violence had been hard on the former king’s house making it difficult to find anyone who remained. It did not take long for Saul’s family to disappear, with many dying and some living in obscurity, afraid or ashamed to be known publicly. Sadly, this was the result of Saul’s sin and rejection (1 Samuel 15:23-26).

Sin’s destruction: sin never exalts and only destroys (James 1:13-15).

Sin’s punishment: sin will eventually catch up to the sinner (Numbers 32:23; Galatians 6:7-8).

Sin’s extension: sin affects many, including family and friends.

David searched the land for Saul’s family. It was a noble quest that was unlimited in its scope. This effort was made due to David’s promise to Jonathan (1 Samuel 18:3, 20:8-17, 23:18). Since Jonathan stood by David when times were tough, David hoped to return the favor to his family.

Position: the fact David was king did not prevent him.

Personal: the fact that Saul had persecuted David did not prevent him.

Power: the fact David was a legendary conqueror did not prevent him.

Prosperity: the fact David was wealthy did not prevent him.

David could have excused himself from this obligation but he was determined to show kindness to Saul’s family. Eventually Mephibosheth was discovered and he became the recipient of David’s kindness.

We should be kind to everyone, including those who oppose us, not because they deserve it but for the sake of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:32).
