And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? 1 Kings 3:7-9
Solomon was a young man given the keys to a mighty kingdom. Blessed with both wealth and power, a rare combination in youth, his opportunities and potential seemed to be unlimited. At this point he may have been tempted to exalt himself. He might have been filled with thoughts such as “look at what I have” or “look at who I am.” Power, prestige, and possessions often lift up the heart instead of humbling it.
This was not the case with Solomon. When conversing with the LORD the young king’s humility was evident.
Solomon referred to himself in a humble manner, as a servant and small child. This tells us that the man blessed with much still knew that the LORD was above him. No matter what we have, or don’t have, the LORD still reigns supreme.
Solomon recognized his shortcomings. People tend to boast of their strengths and avoid discussing their weaknesses, even when it comes to God and with prayer. Here we find Solomon admitting his inability to lead the people. The young man realized his inexperience. He needed help so he looked to God for the answer. Because of this, the inexperienced king asked for wisdom and it was given to him.
No matter the circumstances, remain humble before the LORD and seek His help.
