And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. 1 Kings 11:37-38
When the nation divided Jeroboam became king of Israel. The new ruler had already proven to be a capable leader and was a favorite among the people.
The LORD had even sent Jeroboam a message. If he would walk with the LORD and remain faithful to Him, he would be blessed. It was similar to the messages given to David and Solomon.
So what happened?
Jeroboam did well before the world but was wrong before God. He sought what was best for him and because of this he failed as a king. Seek the LORD first and be blessed.
Jeroboam was a great leader. The problem is he led people the wrong way. Make sure you’re going the right direction so as not to lead others into sin and danger.
Jeroboam was reminded that the LORD was the authority. God permitted Jeroboam to reign as king and blessed him with a kingdom. It seems Jeroboam forgot God as he led the nation. Give thanks for your blessings, glorify God with your life, and remain humble before the LORD.
Jeroboam’s son Nadab followed in his footsteps and also failed to glorify God with his life. Don’t be surprised when those that learn from you act like you. Set a good example.
It’s not that Jeroboam could not follow the LORD, it’s that he would not seek the LORD’S ways. His failure was due to his selfish heart.
Learn from Jeroboam’s mistakes and walk with God.
