Chapter thirteen of First Kings is filled with many lessons for believers. None more striking than those found in the conduct of the man of God, who was called upon to deliver a message to the rebellious King of Israel, Jeroboam. God’s man began well but ended poorly. His faithfulness gave way to disobedience and failure followed. Here are some thoughts concerning this man of God.
Devoted – he was a prophet and evidently he was qualified for the task given to him. 1 Kings 13:1
Diligent – the man of God went to Bethel and delivered the message as the LORD commanded. He was faithful to his calling. 1 Kings 13:2-6
Dedicated – when tempted with worldly pleasures the man of God said no. He refused the generous offers from Jeroboam. He could not be bribed or sidetracked. 1 Kings 13:7-10
Delinquent – he failed to completely fulfill the task appointed him, stopping to rest outside of Bethel before returning to Judah. His lingering, which seemed harmless, would lead to more problems. 1 Kings 13:14
Deceived – he listened to a false message that encouraged him to appease his fleshly desires instead of following God’s direction. 1 Kings 13:15-18
Disobedient – he chose to follow the words of a lying prophet instead of remaining faithful to God’s command. 1 Kings 13:19
Destroyed – his message was weakened, his testimony tarnished, his ministry concluded, and his life lost. 1 Kings 13:20-26
It’s important to obey the LORD at all times and in all matters.
