Praise the LORD

10/20/2022

I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 2 Samuel 22:4

This song of celebration was likely written near the end of David’s life, when he was able to look back upon his trials and see the LORD’S work in his life. The song is also found in the Psalms with some variations (Psalm 18). Evidently it became a congregational hymn of praise for the Israelites. A song sung for many generations.

There are nine personal claims upon the LORD found in this song of praise.

  1. The LORD was his rock – a place of shelter from troubles (Psalm 27:5).
  1. The LORD was his fortress – a place of safety where David was comforted (Proverbs 18:10).
  1. The LORD was his deliverer – a help in time of need.
  1. The LORD his rock was where he placed his faith – a strong foundation in an uncertain world (Psalm 31:3).
  1. The LORD was his shield –  a defense from David’s enemies.
  1. The LORD was the horn of his salvation – a source of strength when David was overcome.
  1. The LORD was his high tower – a stronghold where David was out of reach from those that despised him (Proverbs 18:10).
  1. The LORD was his place of refuge – a place to go when pursued (Psalm 71:7).
  1. The LORD was his saviour – a rescuer from David’s troubles.

Your troubles might be different than David’s but they are real to you. They may produce fear, worry, and anxiety. Let me remind you that God was greater than David’s enemies and his troubles. The LORD permitted David to be tried but He also provided so that David could endure and overcome. In the end, David was able to praise God for His greatness. Let’s trust in the LORD and praise Him as well.
